Welsh-based firm Ledwood Mechanical Engineering has been awarded the Mechanical East works contract for the Point of Ayr (PoA) Terminal by Saipem, the main contractor for the PoA Decommissioning and Preparation Works. Ledwood will support this works package, which will enable the site to receive, and process captured carbon dioxide (CO2) that will then be safely stored in depleted gas reservoirs beneath Liverpool Bay.
During the 18-month contract period, Ledwood expects to mobilise approximately 120 site-based personnel at its peak, including welders, pipe fitters and riggers, supported by supervision and management teams.
A significant proportion of the workforce is expected to bring experience from the oil and gas and power generation sectors. The contract, awarded by Saipem which is the primary contractor delivering the PoA workscope, will provide an opportunity to retain valuable engineering and construction expertise while enabling skilled workers to transfer their capabilities into the developing carbon capture sector.
Ledwood also intends to involve a number of apprentices on the project, giving them valuable practical experience alongside experienced industry professionals and exposure to a world-leading carbon capture project. This will help ensure the future workforce can carry forward the skills and knowledge to support the net zero transition.

The PoA Terminal will play a key part in the wider Liverpool Bay CO₂ Transportation and Storage project being developed by Liverpool Bay CCS Limited (LBCCS). The project will help to support thousands of new construction jobs in north Wales and the north west of England, secure the long-term future of new and existing jobs during its operational phase, tap into the area's blend of industrial experience and scientific expertise, and create a hotspot for innovation and growth.
Decommissioning and site preparation works at the PoA Terminal and Colliery area began in September 2025. Following commissioning works and final checks, the plant is expected to commence operations in 2028, subject to project progress.
