Main Onshore Pipeline: Sheet pile installation underway near Green Lane, Ewloe Green

An update from our construction contractor ahead of the upcoming auger boring programme
Our Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor, United Infrastructure (UI), has started installing sheet piles within construction compounds to the side of Green Lane, Ewloe Green in Flintshire, north Wales.

These works are being carried out in preparation for the upcoming auger boring programme beneath Green Lane, as part of the construction of the Main Onshore Pipeline (the Pipeline).

Sheet piling

UI will carry out sheet piling across approximately 12 days, starting the week commencing 5 October 2026 and ending the week commencing 12 October 2026 (subject to progress).

Sheet piling involves installing interlocking steel sheets vertically into the ground to create a strong temporary retaining structure. These sheets support the surrounding ground and provide a safe working area for the auger boring equipment and site operatives while excavation of the pits takes place.

Once the sheet piling has been installed, UI will excavate within the supported area to form the launch and reception pits. The auger boring equipment will then be positioned within the launch pit and used to install the Pipeline beneath Green Lane without the need to excavate the surface above.

Auger boring

Auger boring is a trenchless tunnelling technique that installs the Pipeline under the ground by pushing a steel casing or tube through the soil while a rotating helical auger (spiral tool) brings the soil out of the casing. Using an auger boring technique ensures minimal disruption to key infrastructure, transport routes, local communities and environmentally sensitive areas. This means Green Lane will remain open during the works.

The auger boring works beneath Green Lane will be undertaken by UI's specialist tunnelling subcontractor, Joseph Gallagher Limited (JGL), and will take place across approximately 12 days, starting the week commencing 19 October 2026 and ending the week commencing 26 October 2026 (subject to progress).

Once the auger boring works are complete, the sheet piles will be removed, and the land will be restored as close as reasonably practicable to its original condition. These works will take place across approximately 11 days, starting the week commencing 2 November 2026 and ending the week commencing 9 November 2026 (subject to progress).

Further updates about the auger boring programme beneath Green Lane will be added onto the HyNet Hub Latest News section in advance.
