Microtunnelling beneath North Wales Coast Railway Line complete

Our microtunnelling programme reaches another milestone
Melany, one of our tunnel boring machines (TBMs), has completed her microtunnelling journey beneath the North Wales Coast railway line, as part of the construction of the Main Onshore Pipeline (the Pipeline).

With her latest tunnelling works now complete, Melany will be transported away for refurbishment, ready for future projects. Meanwhile, another of our TBMs, Emma, is preparing to take centre stage, with tunnelling beneath the Chester and Birkenhead railway line set to begin shortly.

Microtunnelling works require 24-hour operations to ensure the safety of the tunnel and construction team. Works beneath the Chester and Birkenhead railway line are expected to take place across approximately five days, starting the week commencing 26 October 2026 and are due to finish on Saturday 31 October 2026 (subject to progress).

About microtunnelling

Microtunnelling is a trenchless tunnelling technique that buries the Pipeline deep beneath the ground, helping to minimise disruption to key infrastructure, transport routes and environmentally sensitive areas. This means the Chester and Birkenhead railway line will remain open and unaffected during the works.

More information about 24-hour tunnelling works is provided in the factsheet here

If you have any questions about these works, please email the project team at hello@hynethub.co.uk or call the project phoneline on 0113 395 4495.
