Joseph Gallagher Limited (JGL), the UK's largest specialist tunnelling subcontractor, has been appointed by United Infrastructure (UI), acting on behalf of Liverpool Bay CCS Limited (LBCCS), to carry out microtunnelling works in support of the construction of the Main Onshore Pipeline (the Pipeline).
Starting Monday, 20 October 2025, JGL will commence shaft excavations on both sides of the M53 and M56 motorway crossings as part of the preparatory works for the Pipeline's microtunnelling programme. Once complete, these shafts will serve as key access points, enabling microtunnelling works to begin in November 2025.
Microtunnelling is a trenchless construction technique that allows the Pipeline to be installed deep beneath the M53 and M56 motorways. This method ensures that both motorways remain fully operational throughout the duration of the works.
More information about microtunnelling is available here.
