United Infrastructure (UI), our Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor, is set to begin topsoil stripping along the Main Onshore Pipeline route this month, subject to suitable weather and ground conditions. This marks an important step in the construction programme.
These works have been split between two teams, who will begin activities in Stanlow, England and near the Above Ground Installation in Flint, Wales, before progressing along the Pipeline route.
Topsoil stripping involves carefully removing the top layer of soil within the Pipeline's working area and fenceline. This soil is then stored on one side of the Pipeline's working area before construction begins. To support these works, soil surveys will be carried out to identify soil types, moisture content and overall quality. These survey findings will help ensure the topsoil is stripped to the correct depth. It is then kept separate from subsoil, protecting its structure and condition for reinstatement.
Topsoil stripping plays a key part in protecting the land along the Pipeline during construction. Carefully removing and storing the topsoil at an early stage helps to ensure that the land can be properly reinstated after construction of the Pipeline is complete.
