Main Onshore Pipeline: Preparation for underground works at the A494

Preparation works for the launch shaft have started this week
Work is starting near the A494 in Flintshire to prepare for underground pipeline crossing works, ensuring the road remains fully operational while work is ongoing.

United Infrastructure and its specialist tunnelling subcontractor, Joseph Gallagher Limited, has started constructing the launch shaft for the tunnel boring machine this week, and will shortly start work on the reception shaft. Each shaft facilitates the microtunnelling works beneath the A494, providing safe access for equipment installation, material excavation and ongoing monitoring.

About microtunnelling

Microtunnelling is a trenchless tunnelling technique that will bury the Main Onshore Pipeline deep beneath the ground, ensuring minimal disruption to key infrastructure, transport routes and environmentally sensitive areas. This means the A494 will remain fully operational during the works.

Microtunnelling work occurs underground and will require working 24-hours a day to ensure the safety of the tunnel and the construction team. More information about microtunnelling is available here

Further updates about the microtunnelling programme beneath the A494 will be added onto the HyNet Hub Latest News section in advance.
