Microtunnelling beneath Shropshire Union Canal is complete

Key milestone reached as pipeline installation beneath the canal is completed
Microtunnelling works beneath the Shropshire Union Canal have now been completed, marking a significant milestone for the construction of the Main Onshore Pipeline.

Works at the canal started in January 2026, when United Infrastructure started shaft excavations on both sides of the waterway on 15 January 2026. The shafts served as access points, enabling microtunnelling works to be completed underneath the canal, which started in May 2026.

The operation was delivered over a continuous 24-hour working period to ensure both safety and precision.

With this phase now complete, construction will continue along other sections of the route as the project progresses. Further updates will be shared via the HyNet Hub as works advance across the pipeline corridor.

This milestone represents another important step in delivering the infrastructure needed to safely transport carbon dioxide and support a low carbon future in the North West of England and North Wales.
