Our Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor, United Infrastructure, and its specialist tunnelling subcontractor Joseph Gallagher Limited, will start setting up construction compounds and excavating shafts on either side of Chester Road East in the week commencing 20 July 2026.
These works are in place to deliver the Main Onshore Pipeline (the Pipeline). Once complete, the shafts will serve as key access points for the microtunnelling works beneath Chester Road East.
When microtunnelling works commence they require 24-hour operations to ensure the safety of the tunnel and construction team. For Chester Road East, works are due to start in Summer 2026 (subject to progress). An update to provide more detail about the dates microtunnelling dates will be provided closer to the time.
Following a microtunnelling technique ensures minimal disruption to key infrastructure, transport routes, local communities and environmentally sensitive areas. This means Chester Road East will remain open during the works.
More information about 24-hour microtunnelling works is provided in the microtunnelling factsheet here

About microtunnelling
